Earthquake – 2001

On January 26th, 2001 a powerful earthquake leading to massive loss of life and property struck Gujarat. Although the district worst affected was Kutch, Surendranagar district too suffered massive destruction. Deepak Group decided to contribute to the relief efforts. We felt the need to focus our efforts on a village called Tikar Rann in Halvad taluka of Surendranagar district.

Many members of the Deepak team donated their time and volunteered to do various tasks in Tikar.

Volunteers facilitated the opening of bank accounts so that the victims could claim and receive government earthquake relief funds. Besides, they surveyed existing livelihood skills, formed Self Help Groups and held meetings with the community. DF decided to help the women rebuild their livelihoods and to increase their capacities, skills and knowledge that would lead to improved quality of life.

DF implemented the 'Swashakti project', funded by the World Bank and the 'Livelihood Restoration Project' funded by the Department of Women & Child Development, Government of Gujarat in addition to the funds provided by our corporate backer.

Deepak Foundation, in coordination with other NGOs, Municipal Corporation, District Collector and District Development Officer assisted the relief work for marooned persons.

The organization also partnered with Care and worked relentlessly day and night to provide items of daily need such as wheat flour, rice, tuver dal (pulses), sugar, salt, tea, soap, etc to 3,000 families.
