Small Steps, Big Progress: Pratik’s Academic Rise

Project Summary

Nine-year-old Pratik Mela Bhai Bhaliya, a 4th-grade student from Gantiyad village, lives with his parents—his father employed in a private company and his mother managing the home. Like many young learners, Pratik faced early academic challenges. Despite studying in Class 4, his ASER baseline assessment revealed that he was at the beginner level in Language, Mathematics, and Basic English, highlighting clear learning gaps that needed timely intervention.

To support Pratik’s progress, the Deepak Foundation’s Project Vivek Vidya team initiated a structured and compassionate approach. The process began with parent counselling, conducted on 16th July 2024, where the team introduced the project, shared his ASER report, and explained the importance of regular learning, consistent attendance, and foundational skills. This meeting motivated his parents and helped them understand how daily study habits and active engagement could reshape Pratik’s academic journey.

The team continued to stay connected with the family through regular home visits, ensuring guidance, follow-up, and encouragement at every stage. Counselling sessions were held on 20th August 2024, 15th October 2024, 10th December 2024, and 21st January 2025, aligning with every ASER assessment cycle. This consistent interaction built trust and strengthened the family’s commitment to Pratik’s learning.

Along with counselling, Pratik received targeted remedial support. The project team worked closely with him using workbook practice, TLMs, and picture storybooks, helping him gradually develop skills in literacy, numeracy, and basic English. These child-friendly methods made learning enjoyable and ensured that he could grasp concepts at his own pace.

The impact of these combined efforts became clearly visible in his ASER assessments. Pratik progressed from the beginner level to recognizing letters and words in Gujarati, reading number recognition (1–99) in Mathematics, and showing gradual confidence in English. His improvement reflects how consistent support, parental involvement, and structured remedial learning can transform a child’s educational journey.

Pratik’s story stands as a shining example of how early intervention and sustained community engagement can bridge learning gaps and unlock a child’s potential.
